Police Officer’s Christmas Angels
How it started
On Christmas eve day on December 24, 1976 Susan and Bob Corrigan were truly feeling the blessings that the Lord had bestowed on them. Having recently moved to Corpus Christi, having their 1 year old son, living in a house that we loved, Blessed with a great company to work for/with, Lew Borden, and so many other things to be thankful for. We decided right then to go out and see what we could do, in a small way, to help those so much less fortunate. We went to HEB, loaded the car up with groceries and headed out to find a police officer that could point us in the right direction. We found him on Agnes St and Crosstown, he became the first Police Officer Christmas Angel. He had no problem helping us find the families that we were searching for.
As the years passed the tradition continued and slowly grew from the original 3 families we helped in 1976 to over 100 as friends and neighbors joined us contributing their time and money. For 35 years the project was called the Corrigan’s Christmas Grocery Delivery and operated out of a simple checking account. As it grew, the reality of the size, it needed to become more formally structured. With the help of Lance Bruun, my attorney friend, and Rudy Sturgeon, my CPA, the organization became a for real 501C corporation and the name was changed to POCA, Police Officers Christmas Angels. During the more recent formative years two partners that have come to the forefront have been HEB, Alameda and Robert, and CCPD lead by Office Javier Cantu. We could not make it without HEB’s patience and organizational skills and CCPD’s efforts in finding the families that need the most help and their 15 Officers leading each delivery team to make each delivery possible, and all on their own personal time and expense.
A quick look forward to today. POCA has been BLESSED to have three individuals join the leadership and a new non profit organization La Posada step forward in 2021 with funds and toys for the little ones. For “many” of the youth in the families we support, the Christmas gift they receive from La Posada and POCA are the only gift they will receive for Christmas. With the help of Chris Hamilton, I call him THE RAINMAKER because of his fundraising expertise, Alex Harris, Mr. Stability, and last but definitely not least, Joe Hopkins, our CPA/financial adviser/organizer and longtime POCA supporter the organization has more than doubled the amount of financial support that we are able to deliver to the 135+ families that are helped in the last 4 years.
